Unions to ask for double-digit increases in upcoming negotiations

South African labour unions, the National Union of Mineworkers
(NUM) and Solidarity, would be demanding “double digit”
increases in the wages of gold-industry workers in the upcoming
negoti- ations with the industry body, the Chamber of Mines (CoM),
but would likely strike a deal of a 9% to 10% increase, leading
gold analysts have said.

The negotiations were expected to stone crusher layout in philippinesstart in mid- to late June, after
the NUM, South Africa’s biggest mineworkers’ union,

Its national executive committee met lamobile crushing price per tonst week to discuss the
union’s demands, national spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said in
a telephone interview.

The NUM’s smaller peer, Solidar- ity, has already submitted
its demands to the CoM.

“Indications at this stage are that the NUM will provide us
with its demands late in May,” CoM deputy communications
adviser Jabu Maphalala said.

“The Chamber needs approximately three weeks to prepare its
mandate for the demands. This means that negotiations are expected
to commence mid- to late June.”

Solidarity spokesperson Reint Dykema said that the union had
already submitted its “double digit” demands to the
CoM, but declined to give an exact figure.

However, he said that the NUM and Solidarity had held informal
talks and placed strong focus on aligning their demands, and on
cooperation in the negotiations between the two unions.
