The Beginner Guide to Headphones

People use Headphones or „cans“, as DJs call them, for listening to portable players, FM radios, DVD’s or any other audio devices. They work almost in the same way as speakers do. But the main question arises, which is better for listening, Headphones or earbuds? The debate is „on“ — if you are expecting a sharp sound quality coupled with ease of use, go for headphones.

However if you prefer style coupled with portability, earbuds will fit the bill. Most people use headphones indoors while earbuds are suitable when going out more so people use earbuds during activities that require greater movement, while running or exercising. Earlier headphones were bulky, heavy and had separate left and right speakers containing padded ovular enclosures known as ear cups which are often hot and irritating after long exposure to the skin.

Today’s headphones are melding closer and closer to earbud models with wiring too small to be noticed. Wiring of earbuds are typically thinner and they offer a comfortable and pleasurable experience.

Basically headphones and earbuds work similarly. Essentially a pair of transducers that receive electrical signals from the receivers. The speakers of a headphones convert electrical signals to sound waves, thus giving us the ability to listen to crisp and precise audio recordings with ease.

There are various types of headphones available today, but basically there are four types of headphones viz., supra-aural, also known as on-ear, open-back or open-air headphones, they sit gently on or over the ear, circum-aural or also acknowledged as around-ear or closed-back headphones that totally engulf the listener’s ears. In-ear headphones often come in two styles namely ear buds and canal headphones.

Ear buds are sported in the opening of the ear, whereas canal headphones accommodate in the canal itself, forming an airtight seal. The difference between these headphones can be gauged from their style and size. Most people choose headphones from their looks and do not pay heed to their quality and resilience. There are also health hazardous involved with listening through headphones. Businesses are aware of this shortfall and are manufacturing headphones which are better and do not affect the ear canals or tendered skin around the ear and ear canal. Many people believe that closed-air headphones are superior because they are sealed and offer good sound quality.
