Gauteng-based civil engineering contractor Civcon has, for the past seven years, been contracted by Gold Fields for various projects on the South Deep gold mine, in Westonaria.
Civcon’s flagship project was the completion of the construction of the world’s tallest simply supported structure, a 2,6-km- high concrete brattice wall, completed over a 12-month period.

Civcon MD Lex Henning says that Civcon seeks to provide exactly what its mining clients require.
“We have made sure of our operation and safety systems and are ISO9001 [compliant] and are in the process of becoming OHSAS18001 compliant,” Henning says.
Gold Fields’ Peter Collins says that the most important project challenge was logistics and the safe installation of the panels into the shaft.
“It’s worth noting that the panels were produced and installed with no serious injuries. “The brattice wall installation was not without its own unique issues, and, although it took longer than envisaged on the installation schedule, we can look back on a project well done and safely completed,” Collins adds.
