Russian trucks on trial at Limpopo iron-ore mine

Contractor at Kumba Resources’ Kwaggashoek East iron-ore mine
in Thabazimbi, Limpopo, Masingita Mining, has been testing
Russian-manufactured Belaz trucks since February this year.

The truck is the first to be purchased from Belazkomplekt Africa,
the local subsidiary of Russian mother company Belazkomplekt.

Having identified the South African market as a business

Director Dmitry Venchik, who has been in South Africa since
September, perceives the local market to be suitable fdry blowing gold processing plant designsor the
company primarily because the cost of a Belaz truck is about 25%
lower than that of competitors’ products.

The design of the Belaz truck macopper crushers south africakes it simple to operate and easy
to maintain.

Moreover, on-board diagnostic equipment, designed in Russia by
Belazkomplekt, is able to monitor payloads and fuel
consumption.

While the company supplied 45 t trucks to Masingita, it produces
trucks varying from 30 t to 220 t, as well as a wheel-loader and a
wheel-dozer.

Smaller trucks are disassembled prior to being shipped to South
Africa.

These semiknocked-down trucks are rebuilt on site at the
company’s East Rand premises, requiring only the welding of
the body and the fitting of tyres.

Larger equipment is exported completely-knocked-down and
reassembled onsite.

At the iron-ore mine at Thabazimbi, the truck in operation has
proved its robustness, says Venchik.

Moreover, he remarks that the mine’s technical department has
also benefited from the savings affected by the low fuel
consumption on the trucks.

These results have prompted Masingita to order two additional
machines for the iron-ore mine, once tests have been completed this
month.

The technology incorporated into the design and production of these
trucks is based on 55 years of experience at the factory, located
in Belarus.
