The Nkangala district municipality’s (NDM’s) local economic
development strategy cites mining as one of the three key sectors
that should drive the district’s economic growth and development
strategy. The other two identified by the Mpumalanga local
government – centred in the coal-mining, electrcity and steel
district of Middelburg – are manufacturing and energy.
NDM manager Charles Makola says mining employs about 6% of the

operates within the parameters of the legislation and that it gets

He adds that miners have to foster a good relationship with locals

ensure that we expand on fast-tracking the issuing of prospective

neighbours, possible to continue mining activities.” He
points out that local companies will be encouraged through
procurement as contractors or supplies.
The NDM is working closely with the Department of Minerals and
Energy, which is the custodian of the Mining Charter, to guarantee
that black economic-empowerment requirements within the mining
sector are adhered to.
“We have clarity of mind on the issue of mining as a key
economic sector and we are committed to addressing skill
requirements and future prospects within the district. „We have
identifies growth points around mining, which will influence the
energy sector. We have to plan appropriately so that the increase
in energy consumption will affect service delivery in the district,
notes Makola.
The NDM envisages that the lifespan of coal and chrome mines will
be from 20 to 30 years and plans are in the pipeline to transfer
miners to alternative industries in order to sustain the region
beyond mining.
