Lincoln Memorial University welcomed 19 young women from Knox, Claiborne, Union and Scott Counties in Tennessee for “TheCORE: Youth Leadership Symposium” recently.
A subsidiary of Pearls of Grace, TheCORE is aimed at empowering young women. Each letter of CORE stands for a central tenant of the program, including:
Cultural understanding;
Overcoming obstacles to success;
Roles and responsibilities;
Education.
Throughout the week participants stayed in LMU residence halls and attended classes and workshops organized by LMU Women of Service (WOS) and Pearls of Grace. Guest speakers covered topics such as women’s health, financial literacy, higher education and college admissions, diversity, blogging, resume writing and interviewing and more. Additionally, women from WOS shared personal stories of their own successes and learning experiences.
The participants will continue to be mentored by Pearls of Grace throughout the school year. The program is funded through the Women’s Fund of East Tennessee.
Pearls of Grace was established in 2012 and through training and mentoring, the group aims to promote change in mindsets and give opportunities to women and youth that access open doors to self-sufficiency and success.
“We are delighted to have TheCORE on campus,” said Vice President for University Advancement Cynthia Whitt. “This is our second year to host young ladies for college prep experience, as well as having fun outside the classroom with zip lining, cooking and a selfie scavenger hunt. It is week of experiences and friendships none of us will forget.”
Established in 2011, the LMU Women of Service is open to all women who want to help students at Lincoln Memorial University. By living as an example of service, WOS members teach LMU students about the incredibly important mission of service to humanity. With proceeds from activities like the WOS Christmas Festival and the upcoming Service, Sweets & Style for Scholarships fashion show, WOS funds student scholarships, provides family aid and cultural enrichment opportunities to LMU students.
