Should You Be Wearing Shoes When You Run Or Not: The Debate Continues The debate continues. Daniel Lieberman, an evolutionary biology professor at Harvard University published research this year inside the journal, Nature. In the study, Lieberman and several colleagues from Britain and Kenya studied many runners including barefoot runners, shod runners and those that had recently made the switch from running in shoes to running barefoot. Lieberman’s research established that the barefoot runners always landed for the forefront from the foot, where there is much more cushion and spring which reduces the injury risk, even on hard surfaces like cement or paved roads. The shoe wearing runners, however, land with all the rear of these foot, striking heel, ball from the foot then toes in a very rocking motion that increases their risk of many foot injuries. As might be imagined, several experts, including many with links for the big shoe companies have disputed the study, saying that there is no actual conclusion about injury risk with out proof offered that running in shoes was dangerous. Still, those big shoe companies operate to take advantage of the popularity by developing barefoot shoes- which may have a more traditional looking sole and five individual spaces for the toes. It may come down to running with or without shoes with an increase of attention paid for the foot strike.
