How will we store energy from renewable sources in the future? This is one of the key questions for the energy transition. The experienced energy experts at Tractebel are working intensively on this issue. They presented their findings at the 13th International Renewable Energy Storage Conference (IRES) in Dusseldorf in March.
The key focus of the three-day conference, organised by EUROSOLAR e.V., was “Flexible sector coupling”. This is because by coupling the different sectors of electricity, heat and mobility, valuable synergies for the energy transition can be generated. In combination with the Energy Storage Europe Conference (ESE) which was held at the same time, this was the world’s biggest conference programme covering all energy storage technologies.
The energy experts from Tractebel provided important new ideas with their presentation on “Batteries and pumped-hydro: Pooling for synergies in the frequency response provisioning” in this forum. Conference delegates attentively followed the explanations provided by Louis Bahner who, together with Achim Schreider and Dr. Ralf Bucher from Tractabel, is investigating innovative approaches to energy storage. The Tractebel experts consider that the combination of battery storage systems (BESS) and pumped storage plant (PSP) offer an excellent solution for improving the reliability and stability of volatile renewable energies.
