Gold world’s pecking order

South African gold-mining firm Anglogold is expected to machinese nickel ore suppliers africaintain
its status as ‘kingpin’ in world gold production this
year.

The producer – which has 21 operations on three continents,
and exploration programmes in ten countries – produces about
7,1-million ounces a year. It also holds the largest reserves and
resources in the world.

Information gleaned from the quarterly presentations ranks
Anglogold far ahead of the world’s second-largest gold
producer, Newmont Mining Corporation, of the US, which produces
about 3,8-million ounces a year.

The largest gold producer in North America, the company has
gold-producing assets in the US, Mexico, Peru, Uzbekistan and
Indonesia.

Another North American producer, Barrick Gold Corporation of Canada
is in third place.

The company achieved a record production of 3,6-million ounces last
year, which it is expected to achieve again in 2000.

Canada’s Placer Dome and South Africa’s Gold Fields run
neck-and-neck in fourth and fifth place with production of
3-million ounces and 2,9-million ounces respectively.

The successful acquisition of Randfontein Estates will result in
Harmony becoming the world’s sixth-largest gold producer,
mining about 2,2-million ounces a year.

North American producer Homestake Mining is ranked seventh, with a
yearly gold production of about 2,1-million ounces.

Ghana’s Ashanti is in eighth place, producing around
1,8-million ounces a year.

Australia’s biggest gold producer, Normandy Mining, is on
track for record gold production for the June year. It is on
Ashanti’s heels, expecting to report a production of
1,8-million ounces for the financial year ending in June.

Canadian producer Kinross, which produces a million ounces of gold
a year, is ranked tenth.
