Emmys Fashion: True Blue

We’re getting used to the fact that every red carpet – like every new season – shows off one truly hot color that reflects where fashion is – or is going – at the moment. Up until five years ago, red carpet gowns were a parade of all black, white or gold, so we used to have to be grateful for pops of color where we find them. There was the Golden Globes moment of emerald, the last few years of ubiquitous red and red/orange, coral, purple, yellow (last year’s Emmys), and of course, the recent Oscars‘ all turned out in black, gold and silver.

This year’s Emmys saw a sea of pale tones: white, off white, paler than pale pink – but if you want to talk bright colors – it was all about blue. And no wonder – everywhere you look this fall are navy blue dresses, sky blue dresses and teal blue dresses. It’s not surprising designers would want to represent what they also have in the stores as the big red carpet color. And it’s not surprising Hollywood stylists would want to embrace it – and look very fashion forward.

Zooey Deschanel’s ice blue satin J. Mendel dress was a new silhouette for her – a keyhole at the bust (ubiquitous in the spring 2014 collections) with a tie at the waist and an A-line shirt bottom. But it was the icy cool frosty shade that really made the dress – and popped Zooey’s eyes. She still kept the prom-like feeling and the flipped New Girl hair, though. Zooey is very style consistent.

Tina Fey broke character and wore a skintight teal low cut gown by Narciso Rodriguez, showing off – well, flaunting might be more like it – her curves. She wisely kept her hair and makeup simple to make it all about the color. Clearly, Tina is in her sexy period.

Allison Williams‘ Ralph Lauren strapless had a full skirt and also had a very prom-like feeling about it. „I love it because it’s simple,“ she said on arrivals.
