Tuff Rods has been recorded at Sasol Coal.
Brandspruit Mine drilling foreman Gert Deveniere reports to have
now achieved more than 40 000 m of horizontal coal and dolomite
drilling with a string of the rods.
„This type of rod life is not uncommon,“ says Professional Diamond
Drilling Equipment director Graham Martin.
„We have had the rod achieving almost 50 000 m in similar
applications on other collieries.
„While the rod has become an industry standard in tough drilling
conditions, correct handling and maintenance procedures must be
maintained to achieve these results,“ he adds.
Brandspruit has adopted procedures whereby rods are regularly
checked and thread lubricants applied.
Deveniere reports that he had not had a single rod failure with
this string of rods.
„Rotating the drill rods on a regular basis so that wear patterns
are distributed evenly throughout each rod helps lengthen the life
of the rod,“ he maintains.
„Still, this is quite an achievement if one considers the
rotational pull and push forces on the drillrod while in use,“ he
adds.
The patented thread design of the rod has been developed to achieve
more than 40 000 t joint stripping load.
The joint ends are hardened and the coating to the pin ends
eliminates galling.
„Using the rods is saving the mine significant costs,“ reports
Deveniere.
„With no breakages there is less chance of downtime and the life
achieved means we can carry out a full year’s drilling programme
with a single rod string.
