Cressida Bonas: our Glastonbury style hero

Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, never normally threatens our best-dressed lists, but there’s something about the 25-year-old’s festival style which ticks all the right boxes.

At society weddings the trained dancer wraps her coltish figure in too-big clothes which look like they’ve been borrowed from a 30-something big sister, while at cocktail soirées she teeters too closely on the edge of outdated boho-chic that only those mixing around the Kings Road still think is cool.

But pop the pretty blonde in the middle of a muddy field and she looks far more at ease than her try-hard, Ekat catsuit-sporting peers (we’re looking at you, Rita Ora and Mary Charteris) who think attending Glastonbury means changing your outfit three times a day to tick off all the brands that have clamoured to dress you.

Last year she hit a high note in comfortable but playful denim dungarees, neon green sunglasses and a faithful scrunchie, which she topped off with a plate of chips that served to show how Prince Harry’s then-squeeze wasn’t so far removed from the rest of us.

This year, three days of mosh-pit action meant three practical outfits for the Leeds University graduate. Day one called for short denim dungarees in white layered with bits you might find in the bottom of a sports bag: grey hoodie, an Adidas shell top in black and a pair of old DM’s she probably nicked from by the dog basket in her mum’s utility room. Accessorised with plaits, gold hoops and a can of Strongbow, by appearances it would be impossible to know this aristocratically-blooded whippet was more used to mixing with royalty.

Day two of Glasto where Bonas’s style was concerned called for denim cut-off shorts teamed with a white shirt, a pair of battered Hunter wellies (from mum’s house again?) and a bomber jacket with metallic panels. With her fun style staples either on top of her head (bright sunglasses with reflective frames) or around her wrist (that’ll be the scrunchie) it’s not hard to see why fuss-free Cressie looks like she’s having so much fun in clothes than can go the distance, but aren’t precious.

On the last day she wore a sleeveless rock band T-shirt which looked like it had been scraped off her bedroom floor, and that’s what festival dressing is all about; while Alexa and co would take weeks to pick a rock T-shirt with the right amount of irony and cultural cachet, Bonas just gets on with it and if she returns home without it, who cares?
