You surely have heard the story of a Philadelphia man who used a cell phone jammer to block other’s cell phones on the city bus. It raised a controversy at that time that whether it is legal to use a cell phone jammer when others disturbing you. This controversy continued until now. The government has banned cell phone signal jammers for private use, but the ordinary citizens held different views. They think phone signal jammer should not be banned since it is helpful to get them out of unexpected disturbances of cell phones. One of the phone signal jammer supporter said:”A lot of people are extremely loud, no sense of just privacy or anything. When it becomes a bother, that’s when I screw on the antenna and flip the switch.”
The FCC Enforcement Bureau Chief Michele Ellison said in a statement:” In recent days, there have been various press reports about commuters using cell phone jammers to create a ‘quiet zone’ on buses or trains. We caution consumers that it is against the law to use a cell or GPS jammer or any other type of device that blocks, jams, or interferes with authorized communications, as well as to import, advertise, sell, or ship such a device. The FCC Enforcement Bureau has a zero tolerance policy in this area and will take aggressive action against violators”. Why the government insists that phone signal jammer should be banned? The government officer believe that the cell phone jammers do not distinguish between social or other cell phone conversations and an emergency call to a family member or a 9-1-1 emergency responder. In all, they believe that the wide spread cell phone jammers seriously affected the normal order of wireless communication. They are illegal because of the public safety concerns. On contrary, why the ordinary citizen disagree the prohibition of mobile phone jammer? They found that it is useless to ask the people around to stop talking in the bus or in a cinema; because he would tell you that he has freedom of speech. So almost everyone was once disturbed by the unexpected cell phones. As is known to us, it is a society that people cannot discipline ourselves. All of us feel free to use mobile phones whenever we want with complete disregard that whether we may disturb others or not. So some of us have nothing to do but turning on a phone jammer when they are troubled by others’ annoying phones.
Taking these two different points of views into consideration, whether should the government ban the use of mobile phone jamming blockers? God knows. Maybe instead of prohibit cell phone signal jammer, governments will relax their restrictions on mobile phone jammers someday and they will be allowed to use in places like churches and cinemas, etc.
