- At its peak, the number of new users for StarLeaf in Germany rose to almost 225 percent, as companies and employees equipped themselves with the means that enabled them to work remotely during the contact block.
In the other countries examined, the data showed:
- Domestic calls in the United Kingdom increased by 600 percent.
- In France, domestic calls across the country increased by almost 500 percent and international calls from France increased by almost 250 percent.
- Italy, one of the worst affected countries by the pandemic, saw a 1,336 percent increase in daily minutes of conversation.
- In the United States, StarLeaf saw an increase in new user accounts of just under 250 percent. The number of domestic calls nationwide also increased by almost 300 percent.
- Sweden, a country where no curfew was imposed and which instead put „individual responsibility“ in the foreground, saw a 426 percent increase in daily minutes of conversation.
Mark Richer, CEO of StarLeaf, explains these results: “Video conferencing plays an essential role in the transition to remote work because it ensures business continuity and helps people work with colleagues and customers wherever they are. This is also illustrated by the significant increase in video conferences that we can see across Germany. We expect that the use of video for collaboration will remain a central and important part of how a company works when the restrictions on contact blocking are relaxed and German companies start to look to the future. ”
“The financial impact of the corona virus is undeniable and we believe that many companies need to take cost-cutting measures. One area that is being considered is physical office space, with many companies potentially shrinking their office space or looking for flexible office space rather than long-term leases, which can allow a larger number of employees to work remotely. We cannot ignore the psychological effects of the coronavirus either. The thought of commuting back to busy centers like Berlin will be a daunting prospect for many employees. Employers will have to be sensitive to this issue and offer more flexibility to those who feel they need it. ”
“In addition, attitudes towards recruiting are also likely to change. Historically, the ability to hire the best people is limited by the geographic location. With remote and more flexible work practices, companies will be able to think more deeply about who they are employing and will not have to be restricted by that person’s place of residence. ”
Richer concludes: “One final consideration is the positive impact that the coronavirus has on environmental sustainability. This is a high priority for executives in most companies and many will look at how the corona virus has improved their environmental footprint and will build on it. We can expect more companies to reevaluate their travel needs and opt for the more profitable, greener alternatives like video conferencing. ”
