Renewable Choice Energy Recertified as a Benefit Corporation

Boulder, CO, January 18, 2014 – Renewable Choice Energy (http://www.renewablechoice.com) today announced its recertification as a Benefit, or B Corporation, a new kind of company using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. The company originally certified in 2012 and has renewed its certification for another two-year period.

Certified B Corporations meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability while legally expanding their corporate responsibilities to include consideration of stakeholder interests. These performance standards are comprehensive, measuring a company’s impact on its employees, suppliers, community, and the environment. There are now 922 Certified B Corporations from over 60 industries, representing a diverse multi-billion dollar marketplace.

In order to achieve the B Corporation certification, Renewable Choice participated in the rigorous assessment process established by B Lab, the B Corporation certification body. The assessment included frank disclosure of information relating to company operations, hiring and promotion practices, environmental management practices, and governance.

„As a leader in environmental consulting, we feel strongly that our own corporate practices should align with our mission,“ said Amy Haddon, Vice President of Marketing & Communications for Renewable Choice. „By using the B Impact Assessment as our benchmark, we’ve been able to consistently improve the sustainability of our operations since initially becoming a B Corp.“

Unlike traditional corporations, certified B Corporations are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their employees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment. Over the long term, this will lead to a legally recognized new corporate form (like a C Corp or an S Corp) and tax incentives, procurement preferences, and a social stock exchange for sustainable businesses. 20 states, including Colorado and Delaware, have already passed Benefit Corporation legislation and it is under review in an additional 18.

This year, B Lab will launch a Colorado-based branch office, a nod to the rapidly expanding social enterprise and entrepreneurial movements along the Front Range.

„What we didn’t know when we originally certified in 2012 was that we would become part of such a passionate, dynamic community,“ says Haddon. „Aligning ourselves with others that share our values has brought us many positive benefits and recognition. We’ve decided to remain a B Corp as a result.“
