Winner of the DMC 2013 Task 2: Students of Budapest University of Technology

At the DATA MINING CUP 2013 – one of the world“s leading data mining competitions – students from Dortmund University and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics prevailed against 77 other universities from 24 countries and took home the top two spots in the competition.

Search, find, click – and off to the shopping basket with the product. In an ideal world, that is how online dealers imagine the surfing and purchasing patterns of shop customers. The reality, however, is different. Not every product that is viewed and placed in the shopping basket actually ends up with the purchaser. Many transactions are interrupted for a variety of reasons before they ever reach the binding order stage.

Two competitive tasks about predicting orders
This year, the realtime specialist and initiator of the DATA MINING CUP called on students from all over the world to test their data mining know-how and develop a model that would make it possible to predict the actual orders in an online shop.

The classic data mining task consisted of using historical and real anonymous shop data from sessions and which contained information, whether or not the session ultimately resulted in an order for the shopping basket or not, to develop a model that could predict orders in further sessions in the same shop.

The second task was to implement an agent that can predict the probability of an order during a session based on each individual transaction.

99 teams from 77 universities and 24 countries participated in this student competition.

The tasks were evaluated independently of one another so that there was one winning team for each task.

During the prudsys User Days on July 2-3 2013 at the Maritim proArte Hotel Berlin, the world“s best up-and-coming data miners in this DMC year who would receive the corresponding prize money or non-cash prize were announced.

The Winner is …
Team 2 from Dortmund University won first place and a cash prize of 2000 Euros for task 1. Second and third place also went to students from Dortmund University (Team 1), closely followed by Team 1 from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Iowa State University, Athens University of Economics and Business and Indonesia“s Bandung Institute of Technology meant that three international universities placed in the top ten.

The team placement for the second task was equally international. Here, first prize went to students from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Second and third place were occupied by students from the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.
Fourth to tenth place were occupied exclusively by international universities including Cairo University (Egypt), Jagiellonian University (Poland), Cyril and Methodius University Skopie (Macedonia), University of Indonesia and University of California (USA).
