As Clint Eastwood said “if you want a guarantee buy a toaster”. Ever since Kia threw a stone in the pond by offering 7 years warranty on some of their cars, length of warranty has come more into focus in a number of other industries.
Commercial catering equipment is no exception. Many manufacturers are now offering extended warranties. Catering refrigeration leads the way with 3 year warranty offered on Vestfrost low cost models. Gram offers 5 years on most models but slip back to 2 years on their new Snowflake. Heavy duty microwave manufacturers including Samsung offer 3 years parts and labour. Instanta water boilers give 2 year parts and labour.
In the field of heavy cooking equipment Electrolux for example offers at least 2 year parts on the whole of the product portfolio. Additionally 2 years labour warranty on Electrolux is given by some dealers such as Harmony Professional Kitchens.
On the other hand, many commercial catering six burner ranges still predominantly come with only 1 year parts and labour. Understandably very low cost light equipment from Pantheon is limited to 1 year parts,with labour sometimes return to base.
When considering a purchase, obviously all other things beingequal,buyers should go for the extended warranty as it is it not always necessary pay extra for it. Many manufacturers will offer extended warranties for a small additional cost so it is always worth asking especially if a full kitchen layout is required.
Often a manufacturer’s name and reputation plays a bigger part in a customer’s reasoning than warranty numbers but don’t be fooled. Spare parts are expensive and a replacement PCB will be even more costly from a “Big name”.
Some dealers offer parts only warranty as a less expensive option. This is not a good idea if you are buying a sophisticated piece of kit as an untrained engineer can compound the problem and damage the replacement part or the whole kit.
Remember however, catering equipment particularly ranges take some heavy punishment in day to day operation and breakages and failures are often down to abuse rather than manufacturer’s faults so taking good care of an expensive purchase is simply common sense.
