Second smelter commissioned at ferrochrome project

The second furnace supplied by Pyromet Technologies for
Xstrata’s Lion ferrochrome smelter project was commissioned
at the end of October, bringing to an end the company’s
portion of the project, says Pyromet COO David Kovarsky.

The first furnace was commissioned on September 18.

About two years ago, Johannes-burg-based Pyromet was awarded the
R130-million project to design, construct and commission two 63-MVA
closed-type furnaces for Xstrata in the Steelport area.

According to Kovarsky, the relationship between Pyromet and Xstrata
dates back some tweconcret crushing plant in indianty years, when Xstrata was known as Chrome Corp
Technologies.

“We have been involved with Xstrata since its inception,
which reflects the customer’s satisfaction with us and the
way we work,” says Kovarsky.

The two furnaces are expected to process in the jual jaw crusher batubararegion of 364 000 t
of ferrochrome a year and are fed by Xstrata’s propriety
Primus system that is currently being used at its Lydenburg
plant.

With an annual turnover of some R500-million, and in an effort to
reach overseas markets, Pyromet was recently bought into by Techint
Technologcrushers to make granite paving settsies, which acquired a controlling interest in the
company.

Kovarsky says that the Techint group is a large multinational with
more than 50 000 employees, a turnover of $16-billion and a network
of industrial plants and operational plants in five
continents.

“In over 60vertical impact crusher for sale years of activity, the group’s 100
companies have reached levels of excellence in various business
areas, including engineering and construction, steel, energy,
industrial systems and health,” says Kovarsky.

The Milan-based Techint Tech-nologies division supplies machinery,
systems andequipment to remove sand from river in india services to the mining, metallurgical and steel
industries.

With more than 1 500 employees, Techint Technologies has an annual
turnover of around $1-billion.

Pyromet Technologies has now positioned itself to offer a range of
high-technology melting and smelting electric arc furnaces.

The company will continue to operate from Johannesburg, where it
will become Techint’s international centre of excellence for
submerged arc furnace technology.

Techint will boost Pyromet’s capa- bilities through its
global marketing and sales organisation, as well as through
Techint’s production facilities in China.

The chairperson of the new board of directors will be Raimondo di
Carpegna Varini, who is the senior vice-president of Techint
Technologies.

The deputy chairperson will be Pyromet founder David
Pheiffer.

Pyromet has appointed Paolo Argenta as its new CEO and Kovarsky
will assume the COO role. Milan marketing and sales director Mauro
Blanchi Ferri says, “For some time now we have been exploring
expansion plans in submerged arc furnace technology and the Pyromet
acquisition allows Techint to fast-track its growth. In addition,
Pyromet has been actively involved in the industry, securing
contracts such as the Tata Steel ferrochrome project in Richards
Bay, worth R140-million to design, construct and commission two
38-MVA closed-type furnaces.
