Mining major Anglo American’s intention to maximise energy savings at its operations has resulted in its committment to the Eskom-sponsored 49-Million (49M) initiative, which encourages the efficient use of electricity by the private sector, government and individuals.
Anglo American executive director Godfrey Gomwe explains that the 49M campaign aligns with the company’s objective to achieve economically sustainable energy savings thrstone and sand wash in punjaboughout its business by driving operational efficiency, exploiting technology, as well as engaging and partnering with its stakeholders.
“Owing to ouportable crushing plant picsr already deep-seated commitment to effecting real energy savings, we are proud to support the 49M initiative, which will undoubtedly motivate numerous companies anmanufactured sand processing plant costd ordinary South Africans to commit to a more energy efficient way of working and living,” he says.
The company’s energy strategy focuses mainly on identifying and implementing inno- vative technologies which will result in the efficient use of energy at its existing operations.
These include technology solutions to optimise processes and machinery such as air compressors, ventilation fans, pumps, draglines, conveyors and electric motors.
Using this approach, the group reports, it has driven significant energy savings at its Kumba Iron Ore Sishen mine, where it has collaborated with Eskom to install a new dust suppression system that will reduce electricity consumption at the operation by 1.1 MW a year.
Further, the company’s internal energy and carbon dioxide management programme, ECO2MAN, has helped to identify and prior- itise energy efficiency, as well as support the identification of energy-saving measures that will enable it to meet its specific targets. Subsequently, every site at Anglo American has bottom-up targets in place for saving energy, based on a business-as-usual methodology.
